The main focus of this challenge is for students to learn the different types of variables and how they interact (or don’t!) in an experiment. The challenge also asks students to demonstrate their graphing and critical thinking skills to represent data, make predictions and reflect. Students will participate in a set amount of trials using different cups, water levels and distances to determine how variables connect and relate to one another. This activity could be implemented as a lab or cooperative learning activity in the classroom. Depending on the amount of trials, cups, and measurements assigned, the activity may take 30-60 minutes to complete. In the following example, only two different cups were being tested in relation to three water levels and distances.
